Brink is live - first thoughts?

So. Brink....

Best game of the year so far with massive innovations in movement and gameplay? Or buggy disappointment with too few players to bother about? To be honest I almost agree with the second, but I'm relieved to say I'm firmly in the first camp and I think that once they sort the remaining bugs out, this game has HUGE potential.

Bugs are a fact of life, and they are quickly addressing them, bug has the horse already bolted? There are more and more negative reviews coming back which, rightly, focus on the bugs and some of the "lost" features such as the lack of a chat room at the end of the round! The player numbers are declining week on week and unless SplashDamage pull their finger out I fear they may be at risk of losing this game.

In defense of Brink and if you're able to put all that aside and just focus on the game in front of you, what you have is a free-flowing, fast paced and violent FPS with fewer of the hang-ups of the genre.

Brink is coming - 20th May for EU gamers

Freddy Mercury, hard at work.

Well peeps, it's been a LONG time coming, but Brink is finally on the horizon, and boy does this look like it's going to be a good game!

We're sincerely hoping that this lives up to the hype, as it's been 3-4 years now since TG had a single game which brought everyone onto the same server, and that was Enemy Territory.

Take a look at the picture above, and although it looks like Freddy Mercury has been re-incarnated as a security guard, what it's ACTUALLY showing is an Engineer. Yes! an Engineer! Fixing things! Doing the objective! Woot!

Brink is made by the same team that made ET, and they've even said that this is the "son of ET" in many ways:

  • Class based warfare (support the engineer!)
  • Multiple routes to complete mission objectives
  • Dynamic Objectives based on the state of play

Quite a few of us have already pre-purchased the game, so check out the videos on the official Brink site, or on SplashDamage's YouTube page and get involved!

Site upgrades and changes

Under ConstructionWell well you might say - what have we here?

And the answer is basically the start of a whole new TG site!

  1. We've moved to Drupal
  2. We've created a new look and feel
  3. We're integrating the TGT forums into this site so that we can just log into the one place

But we've also taken care to copy over the old content which has been following us around these past 9 years - namely all the old news articles and quite a lot of the images and files. I'm slowly working through the database to link this lot up again, it's going to be quite a slow process i'm afraid!

So, for now, the site is pretty bare, but Hangy and I will be working on it over the coming weeks to get all the old features (and some new ones!) up and running.

See you on X-Fire or Steam,
Goaty

Nikonus Award 2010-2011

March the 23rd is a date most of the older TG members will remember year on year. It's the date when one of our good friends Nick Butcher (aka Nikonus) sadly passed away due to a long term illness. In previous years we've run an award in his honour - giving a cash prize to the TG member who has done the most to create a decent community spirit here, but I think this year given our relative inactivity we can't really justify the award. Instead, for those who remember him still, Nicks parents are still running a memorial site which is open for posts.

The clocks go back and the gaming months are here

With the turning of the year and the end of summer, this is the time of year where traditionally gamers put away any pretence that they are sportsmen or outdoors lovers and hunker down in darkened rooms with fluffy slippers and a flickering screen.

It's been a while since the last update but rest assured that all the members are still here and still keeping an eye on things! TG members are representing the clan within the TGT community and if you join the Steam or Xfire groups you'll be able to catch up with all the activity.

The games people are playing have not changed much in recent months, and while we're not doing much competitive gaming people are in these games daily:

- Battlefield 2 Bad Company
- Heroes of Newerth
- Enemy Territory (Still! :P)

And I think it's fair to say that probably half the clan are waiting on Guild Wars 2 - we're very likely to have a really active TG or TGT guild in this. Keep your eyes on the TGT forums for more.

There will be more regular updates as the clan comes out of hibernation, so dust your mousemat, do a defrag of the HDD and get ready for the long nights of winter - TG is waiting for you.

Enemy Territory Night Of Fun!

Last months there has been close to none updates on here lately, but it is now time for us to ride together again members of The Gathering!

The time has finally come to have an awesome night of fun within Enemy Territory!

fun night

Our public server will be set up with everything that is needed to have one hell of a night with loads of headshots and laughter. What we'll do is of course up to debate, there's panzerwar with low gravity in Minas Tirith which is always great fun and other modes which we could try out.

But we'll start out with playing Stopwatch or pure campaignmode on some cool big maps where pure aiming skill isn't necessary.

Maplist

Daybreak
Temple
Minas Tirith
...
Please come with suggestions! Big public maps are always fun :)
For those of you unfamiliar with the maps/objectives I'll have some quick walkthrough before the game if possible.

FAQ

Q: But I don't have ET
A: Don't worry, check out this guide and you'll be all set.

Q: I'm all new to ET, I'll have no clue what to do
A: Don't worry, there will be more experienced players online to help you out and you could also check out the guide I listed above to learn a ltitle bit more about the game.

Q: All right, guess I have no choice but to play..
A: True.

Q: Will it be a TGT only event?
A: If that is what's desired then yeah. Personally though I'd like to see the server without a password so friends and possible new friends can join in :) A server with players on in ET easily gets new players on.

THE DATE IS NOT FINAL.
If there are many that won't be able to make the chosen time, I'll just re-arrange. I decided to put this post up just so I could get the ball rolling and probably host this event in a near future :)

A new trailer has just been released by EA showing off their next installment in the Medal Of Honor series coming in October this year.

It displays some in-game cinematics which looks pretty nice to be honest!
Might MoH take up the fight against Call Of Duty and Battlefield again? We've yet to see..

Happy Easter!

The TG Admins wishes all it's members and guests a happy Easter!
Eat and drink a lot with family and friends. Buy a lot of candy and take some well earned rest from work and other duties.

bunny

If you take this holiday opportunity to relax online with your family here instead, there ought to be some TG members online even during Easter!

Now at least I'm off to find some Easter eggs ;)
Happy holidays!

Dark days coming?

The Norwegian game developer Funcom, the creator of popular games such as Anarchy Online as well as The Longest Journey series have been working a lot and hard on their next upcoming title "The Secret World" with it's very much catchy motto of "Dark days are coming". There has been many discussions going about this particular game with it's effective marketing, Age Of Conan wasn't that of a great success that the Norwegian company had hoped for, so now they prey that this game will live up to it's hype.

However, yesterday on GDC (Game Developers Conference) held in San Francisco a trailer was released and the response from the audience is really mixed..
What do you think? Will it be a success or should Funcom perhaps give up the MMO genre and start working on the next installment in The Longest Journey series?

asd
In The Secret World you will get to play for either of three above factions which are The Illuminati, The Templars or The Dragon. All have their special abilities and belief.

Check the trailer out here and judge for yourself.
Will the game be a smash hit or will Funcom be the one facing some dark days perhaps...
